My Dear Chief Justice,
enquiries
23 May 1851
After instituting the enquiries which seemed to me necessary for my guidance I have caused to be conveyed to Mr. Anstey the results in the following words:
"On the whole I have come to the conclusion that your public references to 'what occurred at my Table' have been so uncalled for as to warrant the Chief Justice in expecting a reasonable apology.
"Of such an apology I shall not suggest the terms, for with this letter my private correspondence on this matter must close — I leave it to any gentleman whom you may be pleased to nominate or to tie a gentleman to be selected by the Judge and another by yourself, they having the power in case of disagreement to choose an umpire. To any such referees I will send the whole of the correspondence.
